  • Runway Revival [Subscription]The proposal to make full use of Gatwick airport’s second runway is to be welcomed. At present the runway is used only as a standby, when the main runway is out of action. Regulations decree that the two are too close together to be used simultaneously. Hence the plan to widen the second one, placing its centre line the legal minimum distance from its neighbour. The shift required is only a matter of 12 metres, but such is the need for increased airport capacity in southeast England that even relocating a strip of asphalt by this tiny distance should pay big dividends.
