New transport secretary is named

Louise Haigh has been appointed transport secretary by the new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Ms Haigh, 36, was elected Member of Parliament for Sheffield Heeley in the 2015 general election, and became the youngest Labour member of that parliament. Although Labour is planning to nationalise the remaining former passenger franchises, private sector trade body Rail Partners says it wants to work with Ms Haigh.

Rail sector responds to Labour general election win

UK: Organisations from across the rail sector have responded to the outcome of the July 4 general election, which saw a landslide victory for the opposition Labour over the previous Conservative government. Labour’s policies include nationalisation of passenger train operating companies as the existing contracts with private sector operators expire.
