Readers’ poll: should the default speed limit on country roads be reduced from 60mph? [subscription]
The Sunday Times reports today that Surrey county council is to impose speed limits of 20mph and 30mph over a wide swathe of country roads. In a pilot scheme covering 80 square miles, the new limits will replace the current default of 60mph, which applies to all UK roads outside built-up areas where no other limit is indicated. The council argues that a 60mph limit is “inappropriate for most minor rural roads”, and says it hopes to extend the scheme in future.
