Airlines reacted furiously to plans announced by Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, to raise €1 billion from a new œeco tax on aviation.

THE Department of Transport has been accused of “regional bias” after plans to buy extra rail carriages were “reappraised”. Rail campaigners were furious when, after years of petitioning the government to solve overcrowding on Bolton trains, transport secretary Phil Hammond said there was no need to buy new carriages.
