FORMER Trade Minister Lord Digby Jones has condemned the Government's decision over the £1.4 billion Thameslink contract as he backs a campaign to see it reversed. Lord Jones said the decision to name Siemens the preferred contractor for the major train-building contract over Bombardier in Derby was "madness".

THE political row over Thameslink continued to rumble on in Westminster yesterday. Former Transport Secretary Lord Adonis claimed it was "total rubbish" that the procurement process drawn up by Labour meant Coalition ministers were unable to give the contract to Bombardier.
Transport secretary: High-speed rail link will end north-south divide
The first phase of the high-speed network to Birmingham would open in 2026, with an extension to Manchester up and running by 2032. It would slash journey times to London and free up extra capacity on the existing rail network.
