  • Government pays to repair Calderdale bridgeThe government has announced that it will spend up to �5.5 million to rebuild Elland Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. This funding from the government will also fund a temporary foot bridge, near the reconstruction work, which collapsed after the recent flooding, reports the Department of Transport. Work is going ahead for the bridge as it's a listed structure and Calderdale Council will be rebuilding the bridge after it has gone through several structural assessments.   • Scottish High Speed plans are shelved 'in secret' Scottish ministers have revealed that uncertainties about a possible northern extension of HS2 mean that plans for a High Speed line linking Edinburgh and Glasgow will be shelved for the time being. A Liberal Democrat MSP has accused ministers of showing a 'lack of respect' for the people of Edinburgh and Glasgow by keeping the postponement secret.
  • London Underground shortlists builders of driverless trains London Underground has issued invitations to tender for the next generation of trains for the deep tubes, just two days since a door opened unexpectedly on one of the trains which are to be replaced. The proposed contract will provide new fleets for the Bakerloo, Central, Piccadilly and Waterloo & City lines, which will all be suitable for automatic operation. The 'New Tube for London' trains are set to be built by one of five shortlisted bidders. The contract will require 250 walk-through, air-cooled trains for the deep tubes to be delivered in the early 2020s.
